1. Eased Edge (Straight Edge)

A square edge with the two sharp corners lightly ground off. It reads as a clean vertical line and is the default profile in most contemporary kitchens. The eased edge is the workhorse of the industry: cheapest to cut, fastest to polish, hardest to damage, and the safest choice when the slab itself is the feature. 2. Beveled Edge

A 45-degree chamfer cut along the top of the edge, usually 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch deep, with the rest left square. It adds a crisp shadow line and a slightly tailored look without going decorative. Bevels catch light well in gloss-finished kitchens. The one caution is that a bevel creates a defined arris that can chip if the counter takes a hard impact from a cast-iron pan.

3. Half Bullnose

Rounded across the top half, flat on the bottom half. This is the most-requested compromise profile in the industry and for good reason: it softens the edge enough to be comfortable to lean against and to shed water away from cabinet faces, while keeping a defined bottom line so the counter still looks substantial. It suits transitional kitchens that are neither strictly modern nor strictly traditional.

4. Full Bullnose

A complete semicircle from top to bottom. There is no flat face and no corner at all, which makes it the most forgiving profile in a house with small children. The trade-off is visual: because the eye cannot find a bottom edge, a full bullnose makes the counter look thinner than it is. It also puts the drip line closer to the cabinet door, so spills are more likely to run down the cabinetry than off the front.

5. Ogee Edge

A concave-to-convex S-curve, the classic decorative profile. An ogee reads formal and traditional and pairs naturally with raised-panel cabinetry and white marble or marble-look stone. It is a deep cut, so it needs adequate material thickness, and its recessed groove is the one profile that genuinely needs attention when you clean.

6. Dupont Edge

A crisp vertical drop of roughly a quarter inch, then a quarter-round curve outward. It is sharper and more architectural than an ogee while still being clearly decorative. Dupont profiles work well on islands where you want a defined shadow line from across the room.

7. Mitered Edge

Not a shape cut into one slab but a joint. Two pieces of stone are cut at 45 degrees and glued at the corner so the finished edge shows a solid face of any depth you specify, commonly 2 inches to 4 inches, occasionally the full height of a cabinet. A mitered edge is how a 3 cm slab is made to look like a 6 cm slab of solid stone.

The quality test for a mitered edge is vein continuity. A well-fabricated miter carries the pattern of the stone around the corner so the joint disappears. This is where digital templating and CNC accuracy stop being marketing language and start being visible in your kitchen.

8. Waterfall Edge

A mitered joint taken to its conclusion: the stone turns 90 degrees at the end of an island and runs down to the floor, hiding the cabinet side entirely. Waterfall edges consume a significant amount of extra slab, so they are priced by material as much as by labor, and they only look right on stone with movement worth following down the panel. On a quiet, uniform surface a waterfall panel can read as a plain gray wall.

9. Cove Edge

A single concave scoop cut into the top of the edge. It is subtler than an ogee and less common, which is exactly its appeal for anyone who wants a detailed profile without the traditional associations. Coves collect a little more debris than convex profiles.

10. Laminated or Built-Up Edge

A strip of the same material is bonded under the front edge to double the apparent thickness, then a profile is cut across the combined face. Built-up edges are the standard method for making 2 cm material look like 4 cm, and they are also used with laminate and solid-surface tops. Compared with a true miter, a built-up edge shows a visible seam line on close inspection, so it is a value option rather than a premium one.

Granite Countertop Edges: What Changes with Natural Stone

Granite takes the same profiles, but the material behaves differently in three ways.

Grain interrupts the profile. Granite is crystalline, and a decorative profile cuts through crystals of different hardness.
