Cochrane Black is Kitchen Craft's deep matte-black finish on the Cochrane Shaker door, built on MDF. The Cochrane runs a clean Shaker proportion that holds dark paint colors well, with a recessed panel that catches light along the inside reveal even on the darkest finish.
Black painted finishes show every defect in the substrate underneath. MDF gives the painter a tight, uniform surface with no grain to telegraph through the topcoat, which is part of why higher-end black painted cabinetry runs MDF rather than solid hardwood. The result is a finish that reads consistent across long runs, with the deep black holding its tone over time.
Cochrane Black carries an island in a white-perimeter kitchen, a full color-block kitchen, or a primary bath vanity where the cabinetry should serve as the design focal point. It pairs comfortably with white quartz with veining, brushed brass or unlacquered brass hardware, and oak or walnut floors. In a smaller kitchen, run the black on lower cabinets only and keep uppers light, since matte black absorbs more daylight than most finishes.
Wipe with a microfiber cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner. Skip ammonia-based sprays, which can dull the matte sheen over time. Order a sample door first and view it on your counter under your evening lighting before locking in the order, since matte black reads heavier in person than on a swatch card.
